Bathroom makeover: Whitewashed wonder

A dated, guacamole-coloured bathroom is transformed into a light-filled sanctuary
Derek Swalwell

Originally, this 1900s Country Cottage featured a 1970s-era bathroom – the owners kenw, a makeover was needed. Works began with one goal in mind: to transform the 100-year-old bones into a gleaming white space.

The grey vinyl floor made way for the original boards beneath, now painted in Dulux Super Enamel High Gloss paint. The draughty ’70s pine walls were sealed with Selleys No More Gaps and painted in the same colour as the floors for a light-filled look. A few coats of Dulux Kitchen & Bathroom paint in Light Rice unify an ensemble of repurposed and rescued pieces, such as the vanity, mirror and old cast-iron bath, which was found on eBay. An ornate old console table makes a divine vanity when topped with an elegant above-counter basin, fitted by a plumber.

EXPERT TIP: A traditional shower curtain rail around a claw-foot bath is a picture-perfect practicality.
