Dark magic: An edgy bathroom with flair

Dark tones and marble combine for a bathroom that balances practicality with panache

In a dramatic departure from white, this bathroom demonstrates how dark tones can give a space designer edge. Mushroom tiles deliver the wow factor, while also disguising any grime before cleaning day, making it ideal for a family bathroom.

The original space was far less fabulous, but luckily no changes to the layout were required, making for a relatively simple renovation. An inset bath, with a luxurious Carrara marble surround, replaced a corner version, while a shower stands where the toilet used to be (there’s now a separate WC). The new adjustable shower in black, matt black tapware and black power point covers are a striking contemporary touch and contrast nicely with the blocks of marble. A large mirror cabinet stretches to the ceiling and provides ample storage in place of a traditional vanity. The result is a refined and accommodating bathroom with a soothing ambience.

Flirting with the dark side achieves a sophisticated look, while Carrara marble provides a compelling contrast.

A large mirror cabinet breaks up the expanse of dark tiles and bounces light around the room. The Carrara marble vanity overlaps the matching bath surround for an eye-catching effect.

A well-placed wall hook between the vanity and shower is ideal for hanging towels in a spot where a towel rail wouldn’t fit.

EXPERT TIP: Team the old with the new by pairing classic marble with modern tiles for a stunning contrast.
