The big picture brief for this Sydney weatherboard was to turn it into a modern, light-filled space, with a coastal feel that was subtle, natural and effortless, and not too obviously ‘seaside’. The refit started with the complete overhaul of the kitchen. An exposed beam was removed to open up the space and two new windows were added to allow light to stream in.
An island bench painted in Dulux Miles was selected as well as Green Cathedral ‘Babanees’ bar stools for a coastal vibe, with Parisian cafe-style pendants, found at Schots Emporium, enhancing the look; their chrome finish also helps bounce more light around the space.
Tongue and groove panelling and the cross-pattern design on the glazed cupboards, painted in Dulux Antique White USA, subtly ties together the overall renovation. The beachside-flavoured interior is now spacious, clean and uncluttered.
Using textured white tiles is a great way of adding interest and style to a backdrop such as a splashback, without going overboard on colour or pattern. Textured patterns are also less likely to date than tiles in strong colours.
The wall-mounted pot filler is an inspired and practical addition. Having the tap above the Smeg stove means no more lugging heavy pots from the kitchen sink.
