We know that the average home is shrinking in size, making it a little harder to organise and hide our clutter. Home Beautiful talked to Tabitha Krygsman, Interior Designer at IKEA Australia about ways we can deal with our mess at home.

“From visiting the homes of Australians all over the country, at IKEA, we are constantly reimagining the living room and how it is evolving and changing in comparison to what it was 20 years ago,” says Tabitha.

“We believe that the living room is more the hub of the home and more everyday Australians are living in open plan structures.”

The myth of minimalism in the living room

If your living room is more like an ‘everything room’, clever storage is your best friend. Find extra space where you least expect it for the things you use every day like technology, books and magazines.

To reduce clutter you can house these in one location using flexible and multi-functional items.

1. KNALLBÅGE hanging organiser for accessories ($9.99). Simply hang it over your sofa or armchair and your everyday items will be tucked away neatly within an arm’s reach.

2. KOARP armchair (from $199) includes a secret storage pocket on the backrest!

3. KALLAX shelving units (from $65) allow you to customise your combinations and work up the wall to create not only a great storage solution but a visually creative and fun space in your living room.

4. PUDDA baskets (from $7.99) come in different sizes. Mix and match them with other organisers to ensure that your magazines, books and collectables are neatly stacked and put away but are visually beautiful. A tight spot or sloped ceiling might appear to spoil the possibilities but as the boxes are modular the possibilities are endless.
