4 ways to hack Ikea’s $60 shelves

How to make them look more expensive

The best thing about Ikea is that its simple and versatile designs lend themselves perfectly to magical makeovers and clever hacks.

The Kallax series is no exception, with DIY bloggers taking the versatile shelving units and customising them for a totally new look. The result? Highly personalised and stylish pieces of furniture. Here are our top four Kallax transformations.

1. Mid-century modern hack

Blogger Shonee Hawthorn of Hawthorne and Main built a timber base for the Kalax, transforming it into a mid-century style statement.

“I really really love how this KALAX turned out. It really was a breeze once I figured out how to cut the legs,” she wrote on her blog.

2. Scandi-style hack

Interiors blogger Lisanne van de Klift gave her Kallax shelves a Scandi-style upgrade with plywood storage boxes and leather handles.

3. Bright and bold hack

Blogger Amber Kemp-Gerstel of Damask Love used chalk paint to give the shelves a pop of personality.

“Chalk paint goes on in one thick coat,” Amber explained on her blog.

It’s “great for glossy surfaces that would otherwise be an absolute nightmare to paint,” she said.

4. The glam hack

In this clever DIY, blogger Ceres Ribeiro of The Pink Dream gave the Kalax shelves a glamorous makeover with brass ring knobs and an overlay in a Greek keys design.

“I really wanted to add a little more glam to the unit and make it look less Ikea-ish,” she wrote on her blog.

She added an ornate gold frame mirror to tie it all together.

“It was super easy and it definitely gives the unit a more expensive look!”
