For Australians, entertaining is almost a part of our DNA. From having a few friends over for a weekend barbeque an impromptu stop in for a cup of tea, or an extravagant dinner party we love to do it all. Plus, we’re spoilt with a climate where you can enjoy outdoor entertaining pretty much all year round. Here’s how to design a home that is perfect for entertaining.
When it comes to entertaining the kitchen is one of the first places you need to start, the space needs to be both functional and guest-friendly.
1. Island time
Plan your space around the kitchen, it is the natural congregation space. Choosing an island bench or breakfast bar is perfect for entertaining as guests can easily interact with the host without getting in the way! Position the cooktop in the bench.
HB recommends: Go for gas for the ease of use and the cooking advantages – it saves you time so you can spend more time with friends and fam.

2. Butler’s tricks
A walk-in pantry is a great place to keep extra platters, booze and supplies and it is somewhere you can keep dirty plates out of sight! Saving the washing up for later on, because the one negative about having more mouths to feed is that it equals more washing up!
HB recommends: if space permits have an extra fridge in the scullery so you can keep extra drinks and pre-prepared food nice and cold.
Expand the entertainer's theme outside your kitchen and throughout the rest of your home.
3. Go with the flow
Open-plan living lends itself to entertaining, having a space where you can step from the kitchen to living to outdoors with ease is a must. Having blurred lines between areas allows your home to flow and means your group won’t segment. Position your furniture to create zones, perfect for conversation.
HB recommends: don’t forget warmth – a happy home is one that feels comfortable year round.
4. Guests only
A first-floor bathroom is a great addition to an entertainers home. It makes it easy for guests to find and also keeps them from wandering around searching for one.
HB recommends: keep it neat and tidy so no matter the occasion it is always ready.
5. Fine dining
The dining table is the heart and soul of the home. It’s where your family and friends come together to share delicious food, laughter and create memories for years to come. Choose a dining table that is as big as space permits, so there’s always room for extra people at the table! Make sure your dining chairs are comfortable and easy to clean, especially if you’ve got littlies around.
HB recommends: having linen covers on your dining chairs that can be easily removed and thrown in the wash.
Make the most of your space with some simple adjustments that will make it your go-to space year round!
The last thing you want to be doing is cooking in the kitchen whilst your guests are enjoying themselves. Having an outdoor BBQ and kitchenette is a must, meaning that you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying yourself.
HB recommends: plumb in the gas so that the barbecue is always ready to go! No more worrying about trips to the servo to top up the gas.
7. Year-round luxury
Create an outdoor space that is “always on,” treat it as you would any other room of the house think comfortable couches, colourful soft furnishings and decor and a large outdoor dining setting. In winter, have a couple of cosy blankets handy or better yet gas-lit heaters for instant warmth.
HB recommends: for a colourful garden, choose plants that flowers at different times of the year.
