Ahead of the weekend, Aldi’s Sparkling Wine and Wine Buying Director, Jason Bowyer shares five things you may not have known when it comes to storing your wine.
1. Consider optimal temperatures
When choosing which types of wine you want chilled, always consider optimal temperatures and keep the season in mind.
A top tip is to always ensure your wine fridge maintains a stable temperature and is placed away from direct sunlight.
2. Chilling whites vs chilling reds
Fresh aromatic whites such as Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are best served chilled at fridge temperatures, crisp and cold (e.g. 5 degrees). However, white wines that have bottle age or varietals such as a Chardonnay can be drunk slightly warmer than a Riesling or a Sauvignon Blanc, in order to elevate the complexity of these wines.
Red wines, however, reward more if they are consumed at between 12-18 degrees. Lighter reds handle cooler temperatures better, but always consider the outside temperature and the level of alcohol.
For example, serving a rich Barossa Shiraz on a summer’s day would not be that favourable. A great option is to chill the wine to 16-18 degrees, making it more pleasant to enjoy.
3. How to properly store your wine
Wine has traditionally been stored on its side to keep the cork moist while maintaining an airtight seal. The development of the screwcap has meant that this is not always necessary as screwcap provides an airtight seal.
Many consumers still store wine on its side for its functionality and space-saving efficiency. A common myth is to rotate your bottle of wine every now and again, however, this type of extra care is not necessary.
4. Length of refrigeration
Cellaring your wines in a wine fridge is a great way to maintain the perfect temperature and extend the cellaring ability of your wines. The length of cellaring will depend very much on the type of wine and its quality as to how long it will last for.
Consider the wine type when removing from your wine fridge. Whites can be consumed far more immediately, however reds may rewarded more if allowed to adjust to the ambient temperatures. You may wish to allow your red 15 - 20 minutes of time before consumption. A little bit of air should always benefit a good red wine.
5. Storing already opened wine
There are many wine varieties that have screwcaps instead of corks. This makes it super convenient to re-store the bottle of wine for consumption later. However, I recommend consuming the wine two to three days after opening. Just ensure the cap is tightly secured.
