As we reach peak winter in Australia, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas (in July). Although, we love a hot, beachy Christmas, we’re thrilled to have a bonus festive season we’re the magic of fairy lights, woolly jumpers and pudding is set off by cold weather and long nights. To make the most of the opportunity, we asked Swede-turned-Sydneysider Sara Lundgren of homewares brand Zakkia for her winter yuletide style secrets.
What does a cool-climate Christmas mean to you?
Growing up in Northern Sweden, Christmas always equaled lots of snow so to me it doesn’t really feel like Christmas unless it is -15 outside and really dark. This means that you spend lots of time inside with your family, drinking mulled wine and eating lots of Christmas lollies. Now that I live in Australia I think Christmas is July is an excellent idea. I’m a huge Christmas lover – I will take any excuse to celebrate the holiday twice!
Favourite Christmas traditions?
My family is big on board games so games are essential.
Your Christmas in July decorating style?
Lots of candles. And I like to decorate with plenty of fresh pine branches in pots and vases throughout the house.
What’s on the menu?
Christmas ham, Mum’s homemade meatballs and lots of pickled herring!
Christmas in July decorating must have?
I won’t do a Christmas celebration without a real tree! Nothing says Christmas like the smell of fresh pine.
