Sarah Burman, new Home Beautiful editor, discusses her favourite trends, furniture and style

With nearly seven years under her belt at Home Beautiful, Sarah Burman is the new editor. Here, she shares her favourite renovation story, trends and more!

What is your favourite part of working on Home Beautiful?

The best part of working on Home Beautiful is when you get to hold a fresh-off-the-printer bound edition in your hands. It’s a magical moment – seeing the whole team’s creative energy and expertise and attention to detail result in this gorgeous physical thing, that people fall in love with every month. The other great thing is hearing from our readers, when they tell us about how we’ve affected their lives and how they feel about the magazine. That’s what it’s all about.

What is your most-loved trend?

I’ve loved seeing this movement towards handmade and unique items in a home, and knowing where your products come from: the growing awareness of the life-cycle of things. Investing in and repairing furniture instead of just throwing it away if it breaks is becoming important to people as a choice and not a necessity as it once was. Our Instagram, @hbcreativecollection is a hub for all things handmade and designed.

What piece of furniture could you not live without?

My couch. I love collapsing on my couch at the end of the day. I saved up my pennies and bought it on sale about a year ago and I love it with all my heart. I chose a light grey wool fabric, which probably wasn’t the best choice for someone with a young child, but I have no regrets! [it’s a neo sofa from King Furniture]

How would you describe your style?

Obviously, I am a massive dag. But I am surrounded by very stylish people who drag me up by my bootstraps. I’ve always loved mid-century furniture and I’m now leaning towards modern interpretations of that in furniture, with pops of colour thrown in. I guess that’s the Home Beautiful version of my retro style! I want my home to be fun and happy, but I like it to be tidy, too, otherwise I can’t relax.

What are 5 fun facts about yourself?

I’ll give you one: I have a zombie apocalypse survival plan. If you don’t have one, you’re dead-set crazy. It’s going to happen, it’s just a matter of time.

What is your favourite home renovation story?

I loved the modern Scandi home of stylist Aimee Tarulli. She has some fantastic ideas and a gorgeous modern style that feels fresh and family friendly, yet chic, too. See it here.
