Monochrome makeover: Glamour-packed kitchen

Streamlined design and a restrained colour palette define this striking space

As the previous kitchen was stuck in a design time warp, with an awkward layout delivering limited useable space, designer Camilla Molders flipped the entire layout around, opening up the room and delivering a chic new space with a striking monochrome palette.

An unused area under the stairs was brought into play to create a large, walk-in pantry. Woodstock ‘Tabu Ecoligna’ veneer in Raven from Hartnett Cabinets, and floorboards stained in Feast Watson Black Japan, deliver striking impact, with a beautiful copper kickplate contributing an unexpected hit of glamour.

A Sharp fridge-freezer (left) accommodates plenty of supplies. An appliance cupboard has a roller door to screen benchtop essentials, while a mirrored splashback (centre) helps lift the natural light quotient. Task lights underneath the cabinetry provide extra illumination at night. The key to any good kitchen design is storage, and this cooking space comes with plenty of it in the shape of handle-free overhead cabinets and plenty of easy-access drawers (right), which can hold up to 30 per cent more than simple cupboards.

Topped with Caesarstone in Snow, the generous island unit plays host to an Abey ‘Piazza’ undermounted sink and Franke ‘Pyra’ pull-out mixer tap. Pulling double duty as a prep zone and casual family meals area, the island also comes with generous under-counter storage space, an integrated Miele dishwasher and chic Thonet bentwood bar stools, found at Relax House. If you love monochrome style, there are a host of cool decorating ideas to be found here, while this sumptuous kitchen has similarly timeless style.
