Before and after: A classic living room makeover

This transformation opens up the family living space

This once rundown family home has found a new heart in this comfortable gathering space.

Why the makeover?

With Denai Kulcsar serving as both client and interior designer, she needed to create room for her family to live comfortably in her cosy single-storey semi on a narrow four-metre wide block.

Time frame

18 months, including planning and rain delays.

The works

A layout change gave way for the ground floor to be opened up,with the living zone to flow outside to the new courtyard through bi-fold doors.

Major changes

The back of the home was knocked down and rebuilt on a new concrete slab. Custom joinery was also installed and reclaimed blackbutt floorboards laid and custom-stained.

Palette

Walls in Dulux Natural White serve as a blank canvas for a bold fashion print from Paris, which was a gift from one of interior designer Denai’s clients.

Courtyard

Opening to the new courtyard, the updated living area is Denai’s favourite part of the home. A custom sisal rug from International Floorcoverings Australia forms a natural transition underfoot.

Fireplace

“Being a country girl, I really wanted a fireplace,” says Denai. Try the Jetmaster ‘Heat & Glo’ built-in fireplace. “It’s the best thing we ever did as it heats the whole home and just looks stunning.”

Best investment

The display of books and treasures around the fireplace creates a welcoming mood. “I love the bookshelves and fireplace,” says Denai. “They remind me of my childhood, so I wanted to bring them into my own home.”

Budget saver

Buying well, buying once. Although purchased years before the renovation was envisioned, the comfy custom sofas look as though theyare meant to be. Denai says their dimensions are incredibly versatile and the classic style and hard-wearing neutral fabric never dates. The upholstery is 14 years old and still going strong,” she says.
