Striking study makeover

A spare room now does double duty as a home office and a welcoming guest suite

In these space-challenged times, it’s often too much of a luxury to have a spare room standing empty most of the time. A few clever changes have given this compact zone a whole new lease on life, with interior designer Michelle Evans from Doherty Design Studio devising an elegant desk and shelving unit, offset by subtle wallpaper behind. The rest of the area is now home to a comfy pull-out sofa bed, plus a media zone.

The slim cabinetry features open shelving and a floating desk, all built by Desire Kitchens and painted in a combination of Resene Half Oilskin and Dulux White Watsonia.

A new shutter window from Light & Shade allows filtered light through. The walls are painted in Dulux Grand Piano, and the print was found at Urban Home Republic. A Freedom sofa bed is a well-chosen double-duty item for this hard-working space, while the boudoir-style padded chair from Perfect Pieces and patterned cushion from Manon Bis are an elegant alternative to the traditional office chair, and a great choice for a study that needs to work as a guest room.

Retaining the room’s existing built-in-robes and flooring helped to keep costs down. A media unit in Eveneer ‘Ecoargento’ timber veneer completes the scheme. The wall behind has been covered in Eijffinger ‘Uni Royal’ wallpaper from Grant Dorman, which proved the inspiration for the custom handles on the tall storage units.
