Terazzo is enjoying a resurgence and we couldn’t be more pleased. If everything old is new again, this trend is a great example of how something can be reinvented time and again.
Originally used exclusively for flooring, terrazzo is a composite material made from chips of marble, granite, or glass set into concrete and polished for a smooth surface. Made from the offcuts and waste from larger, more expensive natural stones, terrazzo could be considered a poor man’s alternative to the real thing. Not withstanding this however, it’s making a big impact in the world of interior design.
It’s a very cost effective material and a great way to introduce colour in flooring and large format wall finishes, as an alternative to concrete or tiles, and more economical than solid stone but with the same longevity.
But that’s not all. Because it’s a substance that can be poured, like concrete it can be moulded into any shape, whether it’s a kitchen island, dining table or vase.
Like natural stone, terrazzo can be polished to a matte or a gloss finish, depending on the look you’re after and colours in the mix are as varied as the rainbow.
