Bathroom makeover: The minimalist

Simplicity reigns supreme in this contemporary ensuite

With its clean lines and lack of clutter, this ensuite, featured in the Channel 7 series House Rules, is a study in understated style. “The colour scheme is restrained and clever, with a warm texture tile as the hero and everything else playing a supporting role in fresh white,” says architect and House Rules judge Joe Snell.

“It’s always difficult to be warm and fresh at the same time, but this bathroom pulls it off.”

Wrapping the floor and wall in the same neutral-hued expanse of tile creates the illusion of more room in the narrow space, a smart trick that’s further enhanced by the other design choices. “The fixtures along the feature wall, including a wall-hung vanity and a clear glazing blade for the shower, allow the run of tiles to remain the feature,” Joe explains.

A toilet with an in-wall cistern frees up space to show off the tiles as well. The adjacent vanity’s handle-free drawers and simple basin mixers add to the bathroom’s streamlined style, while the standout shower drain works with the room’s rectangular shape.
