If you find yourself waking up in a puddle of sweat each morning, it’s a surefire sign that you’re a hot sleeper. And if you’re currently sleeping on budget sheets woven from synthetic fabrics such as microfibre or polyester, it’s also a sign that your bedding needs a serious upgrade. Hayley Worley, founder of Sheet Society, says bamboo sheets are a great choice for those who tend to overheat at night, “Bamboo sheets are cooling and super comfy – it’s kind of a no brainer.”

But why is bamboo so good? Well, apart from being a natural fibre (with excellent moisture-wicking and thermal insulation properties) bamboo, when produced using the Lyocell process, results in fabric that feels light, silky and slippery against the skin. “Bamboo has a unique softness that’s unlike any fabric,” says Hayley. “It’s one of those fabrics that even the pickiest sleepers can get around.”

What are the benefits of bamboo bed sheets?

  • Bamboo is a natural fibre that has excellent moisture-wicking and thermal insulation properties
  • Bamboo is the fastest-growing renewable fibre and requires less water than cotton or linen to grow
  • It has a silky smooth feel that is cool against the skin

Are there any down sides to bamboo bed sheets?

According to Hayley, even the fussiest sleepers will enjoy sleeping in bamboo bed sheets, but there is one exception. “If you’re a fan of a crisp or structured bed, then it’s probably not the right fabric for you.” If this is you, we recommend cotton sheets or linen sheets instead.

How do you care for bamboo bed sheets?

Bamboo bedding does require some special care when laundering to ensure it stays soft and lasts as long as possible. “We recommend washing it inside out and on its own,” says Hayley who also recommends selecting a cool water temperature and a mild detergent.

What are the signs of good quality bamboo bedding?

Hayley says some of the features to look out for when buying bamboo bed sheets are:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Super soft to the touch
  • Look for bamboo sheets made using the Lyocell process. “This method uses organic solvents which results in a more environmentally friendly fibre – one that is high-strength and has natural antibacterial properties.”
