Crafted calm: Meditate with embroidery

Create your own abstract work with Melbourne artist Belinda Marshall's latest project

A palette of lush pastels and neon brights help put a signature stamp on the unique abstract style of Melbourne based artist Belinda Marshall.

Somehow finding time between creating new paintings, commissions and pieces for her boutique home wares collection, Belinda Marshall has recently launched her latest project –  her very own embroidery kits.

Similar to her original colorful and ethereal style painting, Belinda says embroidery is now synonymous with meditation.

“I started making embroidery works while I had my coffee in the morning before the kids got up and things got hectic and they have served as a form of meditation,” she explains.

“Once I had finished a few pieces and realised that I was going to keep making them I had the idea for making them into kits. I like the idea of sharing a project for others, to pass on that feeling of calm and accomplishment that comes from creating.”

At the moment there are 2 designs available, each based on her painting style, digitally printed onto Belgian Cotton / Linen. The kits include all the required thread, the colour-coded printed fabric pattern, the bamboo hoop, a needle and instructions.

While creating an abstract work of art may seem daunting to some, Belinda assures us the kits are the perfects first step.

“The ‘paint by numbers’ nature of them takes the unknown out of it and serves as an introduction to the experience of creating work.”

The kits come in two sizes, available via www.belindamarshall.com
