Interior design-philes will be familiar with the innovative work of Rina Bernabei and Kelly Freeman. For over 15 years they have continued to push the boundaries of the way we use pattern, texture and furniture in the home, advancing designs of textiles, lighting and furnishings for our indoor and outdoor spaces.

Having taken us to new heights with covetable and colourful perforated pieces, their newest collaboration unites their work with Designer Rugs in-house expert Christine McDonald to produce four irregular-shaped, hand-tufted wool rugs that will take your breath away.

HB Editor-in-chief Wendy Moore is a long-time fan and is thrilled with this new collaboration. “I absolutely love bernabeifreeman – two fearless Australian women who have designed beautiful pieces that combine strength with fragility for years. I always love everything they do, and this collection is no exception.”

Identifying a gap in the market for soft and subtle colour, inspiration for the collection was drawn from aerial views of landscapes. “They are all abstracts of landscapes, where we have taken it upon ourselves to formalise the graphic elements,” says Rina Bernabei. “What comes from the natural element, is not just the design and colour, but also the texture; the pile heights and types of pile used to create depth in contour,” Bernabei says.

“We felt what was needed in the interior design scene was strong colours – strong tones of colours, but pared back. For example in Crossing the shades of nudes, with pinks and grey.”

“These are very European rugs and they will appeal to people who like the lift of light and colour in a room. There are lots of different gradients and shades of colour in this collection and a bit like a complex landscape, there are up to eighteen shades of colours in some of the designs,” says Bernabei.
