You’ve scored a bargain at your local op shop or garage sale, or perhaps found the perfect chair by the side of the road – all they need is a little TLC. With these simple steps and some imagination, you can totally transform an entire room.

Sand, prime, and paint! These three simple skills will help you upcycle a variety of timber furniture pieces that need a little extra love – why not look around the home and garage for old furniture that you could use?
What You’ll Need:
Op Shop Furniture
Electric Sander or 80 Grit Sandpaper
Primer
Spray Paint
Gloves
Mask
Safety glasses
Drop Sheet
Masking tape
Step 1: Sand
Using the electric sander or sandpaper, sand your timber furniture to remove any lacquer or blemishes. If you want to save time, an electric sander will make for lighter work.
Step 2: Dust
Using a damp rag, remove excess sanding dust. You’re now ready to add primer to your furniture.
Step 3: Prime
Wearing gloves, apply spray primer to your furniture. Be sure to spray about 30cm away from your surface for best results. Leave to dry.
Step 4: Tape
If you need to protect a mirror or want to mix match paint colours, use masking tape on your furniture.
Step 5: Paint
Once you’ve chosen your colours, it’s time to spray paint your items. Holding the can approx 30cm from the item, spray paint your furniture evenly. Leave to dry and repeat additional coats of paint as required.
Step 6: Remove Tape
Once your furniture is completely dry, remove all masking tape.
Step 7: Style & Use
