4 of the best colour trends of 2019

The only colours you should be using in your home this summer. - by Laura Barry

Some colours are timeless, such as black, white, cream and grey, while other colour trends tend to become popular in waves. One year it’s all about dusty pink and mustard, the next it’s all blues and greens. However, the Dulux colour trends for 2020 manage to successfully walk the line between contemporary and timeless, ensuring the predicted colour trend palettes have longevity and relevance well into the future.

The Dulux Colour Trend report has used global research to identify four key colour palette trends. Comeback, Cultivate, Grounded and Indulge.

These colour trends are influenced by what’s happening in the world around us,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager. “With more focus on mental health, the wellness movement continues to gain momentum, as does an emphasis on natural materiality.”

“Colours for 2020 are more restrained than in previous years. Brights are pulled back and influenced by nature. They appear in smaller doses – think feature walls and details – and are often used tonally as a backdrop for hero furniture pieces. Neutrals are soft and sophisticated, with a gently faded feel that speaks of stillness and calm. Clay, with its warm, earthy appeal, is emerging as a key neutral.”

For those of you planning to redecorate, re-paint or renovate your home during the coming 12 months, these are the colours you should consider painting on your walls, upholstering your furniture in or putting on your bed.

1. Comeback

The Comeback palette is inspired by travel, adventures and escaping away from the chaos of the world. The colours in this palette are tonal blues, warm burgundy, rust and mustard, and together they create a sense of calm in a room. This palette plays well with mid-century modern styling, or homes that combine vintage and antique pieces with the new and contemporary.

2. Cultivate

Cultivate aims to bring elements of nature inside, and as such you’ll find calm and gentle green shades within this palette, paired with chalky blue, plum and earthy shades. These colours are easy to work with and will suit most homes.

3. Grounded

Curated to reflect craftsmanship, authenticity and understated beauty, the Grounded palette focusses on pared-back and uncomplicated interiors. The palette includes biscuit and caramel shades of neutrals and muted lavender and terracotta. Pairs beautifully with gold.

4. Indulge

This rich and dramatic palette is all about lush and romantic styling. It works well with curvaceous furniture and plush fabrics such as velvet. Not for the faint of heart, this palette boasts colours such as burgundy, eggplant, browns, terracotta and coral.
