Easy ways to add a Hamptons feel to your home

Beachside bliss wherever you are

A change is as good as a holiday, especially if you’re making over your home with a Hamptons feel.

Not sure where to start? Here are some updates and renovations you can make to your abode to nail the relaxed and timeless look often seen in the beachside holiday homes in the Hamptons, New York.

1. Update the exterior

Your home’s facade is the first place to start your transformation. Not only will weatherboards instantly transform and soften the look of your home, but they are also an essential ingredient for Hamptons-style homes. James Hardie’s durable fibre cement Weatherboards are an excellent choice for covering a brick or rendered exterior. For a perfect finish, add James Hardie Axent trim around windows and doors in contrasting colours.

2. Renovate the kitchen

The kitchen will be the hub of your home once you are finished with it. Think white shaker-style cabinetry, a large, marble or wooden island benchtop and a ceramic subway-tile splashback. Add some barstools to your bench, and you’ve got yourself all the makings of a classic Hamptons-style kitchen. Just don’t forget the contrasting cupboard handles.

3. Create space and light

Have a look at your floorplan and ask yourself the following questions: can any walls be removed to create an open-plan living area? What about your windows? Could they be replaced or moved to ensure you are making the most of the morning and afternoon sun? Most importantly, if you haven’t got an outdoor entertaining area, can you add one? Alfresco dining is what makes our climate so perfect for Hamptons-style homes.

4. Connect your indoor and outdoor areas

Once you’ve got your outdoor area sorted, make sure the styling and design feel connected with the rest of your house. This can be done by installing large bifold doors and streamlining the colour scheme from inside to out, including matching flooring. All of this will encourage a seamless flow throughout your living areas.

5. Fresh whites

Nailing your colour palette is essential. Opt for whites and neutral colours, contrasted with navy, sea greens and blue extras. Doing so will create a clean, crisp look throughout your home.

6. Flooring

While your interiors should be light, bright and airy, the floor will tell a different story. Darker wooden floorboards are a durable and fashionable base when it comes to the Hamptons look. Timber flooring is a practical choice that will never go out of style.

7. Furnishings

Big, comfy, neutral-coloured furnishings add the relaxed vibe that the Hamptons-style homes are known for. Consider a large potted palm to bring an element of nature inside, contrast rugs made from natural materials with your floorboards and don’t be afraid to play with texture.
