7 entertaining essentials that every host needs

Love dinner parties and get togethers?

Do you fancy yourself something of a fabulous dinner party host? Do you love to entertain guests and impress them with your enjoyable yet suave soirees? Then it’s important that you have the necessary tools in your arsenal to ensure that every dinner party or celebration is as stylish as it is fun. These are the seven essentials every dinner party host needs.

1. A table runner

A smart and stylish table runner is the perfect option for those who like a dressed table that isn’t too fussy. Choose a table runner in a neutral colour that will work for every occasion, such as linen in white, beige, navy, black or cream. This will look particularly great on timber tables.

2. A tablecloth

Keep your tablecloth for more formal occasions such as sit-down dinners and birthdays. Choose a tablecloth in a neutral colour palette that can be reworked to suit multiple occasions, and choose a fabric that is robust enough to withstand multiple washes, such as 100 per cent cotton or linen. A crisp white tablecloth is usually the perfect dinner party option.

3. A selection of beautiful glassware

The overall appearance of a beautiful table can be reduced by chipped, scratched or just plain old glassware. But that doesn’t mean to say it has to be new. Having a selection of gorgeous glassware for drinks and wine will elevate any table. Collect beautiful glasses that are in mint condition from second hand or antique stores, and mix and match them with pretty, similarly shaped and styled glasses from affordable retailers.

4. Delightful dinnerware

To really impress your guests it’s important to have a fabulous dinnerware set ready to go. Stoneware in natural colours mix and matched with more trendy shades such a green, blue, lavender or pink can really make a table feel warm and welcoming. Try layering a large plate in a neutral shade of white or beige with a smaller plate in sage green. Top with a linen napkin and a sprig of thyme for a place setting that looks luxe.

5. Napkins

Nothing looks as good in a creased and crumpled state as linen. A nice set of linen napkins might set you back a few dollars to begin with, but as any entertainer knows, these beauties wash up well and always look a million bucks draped over a dinner plate.

6. Classy cutlery

Have you got a full and extensive set of classy cutlery you can pull out for a dinner party or birthday? If not, never fear, because you can pick up affordable yet snazzy options at places such as Ikea, Myer and Target. Look for cutlery that has elegant lines, such as elongated prongs on forks and sweeping knives.

7. Centrepiece

A centrepiece is the best was to spruce up any boring table. It needn’t be over-the-top or expensive. A large, squat vase filled with flowers can look gorgeous arranged at the centre of the table, or even create a wreath out of eucalyptus branches and pop a candle in the middle.
