Set a pretty table

Plant a wisteria around a pergola and you’ll be rewarded with a burst of clustered purple flowers in spring. You’ll need all-day direct sun to increase your chances of a beautiful full flowering effect. Match your table setting to the flowers by picking up the pinks and purples, and adorn it with bunches of spring blooms. A Victoria sponge completes the perfect morning tea.

Create a relaxing reading nook

A shady corner of your garden can be transformed into a quiet retreat. Hang a hammock, layer with cushions, and complete the set-up with a small table for drinks and a good book. A white wicker table is a good choice to lighten and brighten a shady spot.

Invest in quality furniture

A good outdoor furniture set will see you through many summers. Create a cosy entertaining space with plenty of comfortable cushions and soft seating. Add a couple of occasional tables as a practical spot to place drinks, and ground it all with an outdoor rug in a matching colour.

Layer your greenery

Add texture to a hedge with rows of identical hanging pots. Use the same plant for a strong style statement – rhipsalis is a hardy plant with a beautiful trailing effect – or create interest with a collection of different species. Add a punch of colour with a set of matching pots. A swing can be enjoyed by children and adults alike – even if it’s just for perching in the sun.

Add a rustic element

Attach a set of wheels to a tree stump for the ultimate portable outdoor coffee table, and balance it with a textured jute rug. Soften the look with throw rugs and cushions in matching tones, and pick out a pop of colour.
