Twelve years after his last game of professional AFL football, Gavin Wanganeen has opened his first major solo art exhibition at Adelaide's Hill Smith Gallery. Opening today, 'Connected' will showcase eight of Gavin's colourful works, running until May 5.
The Brownlow medalist and Hall-of-Famer says his transition into contemporary art has given him a new focus, allowing him to further explore his ancestral links, relationships and story. "When I paint it brings me back to my culture, my Mum was part of the stolen generation herself and was taken from her parents when she was a young girl. To learn all about that is really powerful stuff," he explains.
“Art has helped me to move on from Footy and connect with my culture” ~ Gavin
