Must-haves vs lust-haves: Bathroom

It is all about being smart about what is a good investment and not just a luxury item

LUST-HAVES

Your dream bathroom is likely a vision of spa-style serenity. “Lust-haves include a double shower or rain shower, solid surface or stone freestanding bath, custom mirrored cabinets flush inset into the wall, a stone or solid surface floating benchtop and feature pendant lights,” says Darren. Materials would be the height of luxury – natural stone or large-format porcelain tiles from floor to ceiling.

MUST-HAVES

Bathroom must-haves will be different for every family – a separate loo perhaps, for the brood always battling over bathroom space, or a walk-in shower for older folk who don’t want to be stepping into and out of a bath. Other useful inclusions might be double basins, a bath and extra storage.

COMPROMISE

“For a luxe look on a budget, use cheaper tiles on the large surface areas like floors and walls, and marble as the feature on the vanity top,” says Luisa. Or, as Aimee and Frank are planning for their family bathroom and guest ensuite, restrict tiling to wet areas. Consider also using cheaper tiles in the main wet zone, but splashing out on something special in the powder room.
