A country-style cabinet gets an amazing Hamptons makeover

Such a gorgeous transformation

Repurposing old furniture is a great way to freshen up your home without spending a fortune.

Sonia Heard is a huge fan of the Hamptons style and wanted to give her old wooden cabinet a makeover. Using just a few coats of paint and some new handles, she completely transformed it.

The project took longer than Sonia expected as she was fitting it in between work and did it over a few weeks, however she says if she’d had the time to dedicate to it, it would be doable in two days.

She applied three coats of used Rustoleum Chalk Paint in Linen White and one coat of Rustoleum Matt Clear top coat from Bunnings to achieve the look. The handles are Prestige Hampton Knobs in matte black, also from Bunnings.

“All up I spent just under $250 for paint and handles but I now have almost a whole tin of the linen white and at least half a tin of the top coat so I’m all set for my next project – the bookshelf and filing cabinet,” Sonia told Home Beautiful.

“I did not use a primer as the man in Bunnings was sure I didn’t need one however I did get a few spots of yellow tannins bleeding through – I touched them up and they seem ok at the moment – however in the future I would use a primer such as Zinsser BIN primer as I now understand this should stop the bleed-through and I probably wouldn’t have needed the third coat of chalk paint.

“I used paintbrushes however next time I would use a small foam roller on the flat parts to speed up the process,” she added.

“I am really happy with the result, it brightens the room and it is nice to have a change from country to more Hamptons style.”
