The ’90s may be currently enjoying a resurgence in the realms of fashion and music, but when it comes to kitchen design, this is one decade that best remains forgotten. Cue classic Hamptons kitchen renovation rescue.
“Our kitchen was screaming ‘1990’!” exclaims the homeowner of this Queenslander, who cringes as she recalls its tawny walls, heavy granite benchtops and stark furniture.
Tracey Leeson of Porch Light Interiors was the woman tasked with refreshing and refurbishing a new kitchen space inspired by classic Hamptons style. To keep costs down, the room’s footprint remained the same, with the exception of a larger island bench to accommodate easy entertaining when friends drop by.
Bright white paint gave the kitchen a new lease of life, together with a clever arrangement of marble mosaics that draws the eye towards views of swaying gum trees through windows that flood the entire space with natural light.
Other highlights include delicate glass pendant lights and custom-made bar stools, which play ode to the Hamptons while staying true to the Queenslander spirit. “Before, this kitchen didn’t really feel like us – now it feels like our home,” says the homeowner. “I feel like we’ve done justice to the outside.”
Keeping to the Hamptons colour palette was key. The light grey and white tones of the Carrara marble benchtop are picked up in the paint colours: Dulux Whisper White on the walls and shaker style cabinetry, and Resene half-strength Delta Grey on the island. The crisp, cool hues are tempered by rich, reddy wooden floorboards – a very Australian take on the Hamptons aesthetic.
A gorgeous green outlook takes centre stage in this Hamptons style kitchen space, accompanied by simple accessories and lovely lighting in the form of Mayfair wall sconces and ‘Celeste’ hanging lamps, both from Emac & Lawton.
