Home tour: Miami-inspired art deco home

This luxury Sydney home balances art deco style with a contemporary feeling

It was love at first sight when Michelle Macarounas, principal and lead designer of Infinite Design Studio, encountered the dilapidated art deco building in Sydney’s beachside suburb of Coogee.

Inspired by the curved bay windows and views of the bay, she worked to transform it into a dramatic and opulent home, which at once captures her personality and style – vibrant, eclectic and elegant – while meeting the needs of her family.

We talked to Macarounas about her inspiring home.

What was your design inspiration behind the renovation for your Coogee residence?

My passion for modernism informed my design direction for the space, and we worked to introduce an elegant and contemporary look, bringing deco properties back to a modern design.

What look were you going for?

I wanted to combine the luxury and eclectic elegance of European design with the relaxed and casual ease of Australian design. The design of the space sensitively balances Art Deco references with a contemporary aesthetic. In the 1920s and ’30s, Art Deco designers created furniture and spaces that celebrated luxurious materials and polished surfaces.

This Coogee residence similarly does so with Indian limestone-tiled bathrooms, vivid white gloss joinery with Calcutta marble, Wenge timber floors finished in black Japan and a wall of golden hexagonal tiles that reflects the ocean view.

Can you talk us through the key pieces used in some of the spaces?

Key pieces used include Berhnardt Design Oslo chairs and an Andreu World Reverse Dining Table from KE-ZU, Charles Sofa by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, George Nelson Bubble Lamps as well as some pieces sourced from Egypt.
