Two-thirds of house hunters are put off by this one feature

It’s no secret that Gen-Y and Gen-Z are desperate to get on the property ladder. But in a time when home values have skyrocketed, it turns out there’s more than a price tag that’s putting off first home buyers. According to new research, one aspect is putting off potential buyers more than anything. 

According to a new study conducted by Privilege Home Insurance, the biggest turn off for house-hunters is property damp. 

Other unattractive characteristics include pattered or bright wallpaper, toilet covers, chandeliers and vinyl flooring. More than one-third of viewers would turn away if there was too much clutter. 

The quickest way a property will sell? Cleanliness was the big winner, followed by outdoor space, a walk-in wardrobe with kitchen storage also a big bonus. 

If you are in the market for a new place, maybe leave the hubby at home. The findings suggest that women are 10 per cent likelier to point out structural issues, damp, bad DIY jobs, a lack of natural light, storage or outdoor space. 

How can I get rid of damp?

If you’re looking to get rid of or avoid those nasty grey stains on walls, there is a solution: damp proofing. 

There are three options:

  • You can instal a physical damp course, a PVC sheet that can help prevent moisture from entering your home from below. 
  • Chemical injections into holes drilled into mortar lines which can create a waterproof layer. 
  • Waterproofing – this may require more structural work, replacing current plasterboard with a waterproof substitute.
