Teams QLD, WA and SA remain on House Rules to tackle the enormous makeover of Bezzina House, a charity home in Sydney adjacent to St George hospital, designed to house families during extensive cancer treatment. Teams worked together to makeover the large common room and were each assigned an identical apartment to transform with rules set in turn by judges, architect Drew Heath, Home Beautiful’s Wendy Moore and UK designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Teams divided the common room space into kitchen, dining and lounge areas with the theme of ‘Botanica’, inspired by Home Beautiful magazine’s own 2017 Trend Forecast. Vast blooms on the floral wallpaper design from Pickawall covered the length of one wall, with the colour scheme echoed throughout the room in the fabrics and finishes in each area.

Team WA, Andrew and Jono surrounded the kitchen with a splashback of ‘Bowl Curve’ tiles in light blue, rose and grey from Beaumont Tiles and at the Caesarstone ‘Organic White’ kitchen bench lined up a trio of ‘Oslo’ stools in Black and White from Life Interiors.

Team SA, Kate and Harry chose the living room, with a snug ‘Hakalau’ chunky jute rug in Pale Pink beneath a ‘Provence’ 3 seater sofa from Brosa, accented with layers colour and texture in throws and cushions.

In the dining area, Team QLD, Aaron and Daniella opted for 2 full size ‘Magnus’ dining tables in solid oak dining tables from Icon By Design, surrounded by replica ‘Hal’ chairs in Black from Matt Blatt. An offcut of wallpaper serves as a decal on the dining tables.

For this challenge, each team was given rules from one of the House Rules judges

Team WA Andrew and Jono were given judge Drew’s rules:

  1. Get back to nature with an easy modern style
  2. Be inspired by the colours of a sunset
  3. In every room make one thing do two things

Andrew and Jono embraced Drew’s rules and decorated their unit in pared back, modern tones using texture and natural finishes to tell their design story, lining the kitchen surround in timber panelling. Drew’s rule directing double duty for an item in each room saw the bench seating provide clever storage underneath and their dining area concentrated on the colours of the sun with ‘Julien’ dining table and ‘Bailey’ leather look dining chairs from Life Interiors.

In assigning Laurence’s rules to themselves, Kate and Harry were concerned at first that they’d taken on too much pressure in the design department but overcame their fears to deliver a cohesive zone full of opulence and drama. Laurence’s rules were:

  1. Charm me with Neo Classical style
  2. Include a Coral Paprika and Silver colour palette with Mother of pearl highlights
  3. Indulge my love of antiques and taxidermy

Kate’s peacock from Mitchell Road Antique & Design Centre steals the show in the bedroom, ticking colour palette and taxidermy rules to great effect. Adding highlights of paprika in the bedlinen with a throw from and a ‘Hannah’ navy velvet bedhead from Brosa. Their neoclassical dining area was tricked up with silver paint and upholstered chairs.

Daniella was pleased to be given Wendy’s rules by Kate and Harry and effect an Art Deco design aesthetic:

  1. Bring back the best of Art Deco
  2. Create space for a quiet moment of private healing
  3. Mix indigo and emerald

Kitchen steeped in refined navy ‘Devonshire Motif’ gloss tiles in Blue Jeans from Beaumont Tiles form a striking splashback above refined finishes of dark Polytec cabinetry with a Matte Black finish. Smeg appliances include a compact speed oven, a ceramic cooktop and rangehood.  In the bathroom their tile choices take on a little refinement with metallic touches in tapware and geometric patterns in the flooring.
