It’ll be some time before House Rules contestants will have a chance to sit down and enjoy their renovated dining rooms. We recap on what they have to look forward to.
Team Victoria – the first renovation
In the first renovation in country Victoria for Fiona and Nicole, despite the warm tones imbued into the dining room decoration by Tasmanians Sean and Ella, the result left the girls a little cold. The ‘Ghost Road’ framed print from Matt Blatt and recycled timber dining table from Early Settler, reflect the immediate environment, but perhaps a little too closely for comfort. We love the soft tones and natural timbers, offset by the crisp white dining chairs and continued to a tonal hide rug to warm things up underfoot.
Kate and Harry – South Australia
With Kate and Harry choosing the living room zone to redo in the 24hr Fixup challenge, removing this wall adjacent to the dining room was at the top of their agenda to open up the space. In isolation however, Andrew and Jono were commended by the judges on their styling of this space, showing a real flair for layering colour. Judge Drew Heath’s appreciation of the salon style arrangement of artworks on the pale pink wall was echoed by Kate and Harry who were not averse to the warming tone. ‘Lancette’ pendant light from Beacon Lighting.

Tasmanian contestants Sean and Ella took a risk with this larger-than-life Pickawall wallpaper of an antique floral design, the tones on task and the boys eventually warming to the big blooms. The bench seat with comfy cushions in tonal velvets invites entertaining and cosy conversation around the mango wood dining table from Sitting Pretty furniture. Statement light fittings were an early indication of team Tassie’s flair for interior design.
Troy and Bec’s ultra modern marvel
Troy and Bec’s rule to “create an ultra-modern castle to be proud of” truly inspired this dining space, achieved with aplomb by Gold Coast couple Aaron and Daniella. Up-to-the-minute styling in light fittings and steel-and-polypropelene dining chairs from Matt Blatt keep the lines clean and sophisticated. The black and navy colour scheme is the ultimate in modern contemporary chic.
Team Queensland’s Tropical Delight
Aaron and Daniella asked for the interior decoration of their Gold Coast home to reflect it’s location so they’d always be surrounded by a holiday vibe. With yet another dining room scheme to design and execute, WA brothers Andrew and Jono nailed the tropical brief, despite the space squeeze dealt them by the neighbouring SA kitchen and Tasmanian living room. Keeping things neutral and natural, they punctuated the room with fun pops of colour in the dining chairs and accessories from The Modern, the final touch to introduced greenery to keeps things lush.
Blushing beauty for Sean and Ella
With their statement piece pendant lighting design winning them a team of painters for their entire zone, Team SA Kate and Harry took advantage of the professional skills on offer and enlisted them to highlight the architectural detail of the coffered ceiling (created using USG Boral’s ‘Cairo’ 2-Step Cornice) in a soft pink hue above their carefully considered dining space. With Harry’s handmade feature wall picking up the pink and indoor plants injecting greenery throughout, they hit the House Rules on the head, making the homeowners blush with pride.
