House Rules 2017: Team Tassie garden reveal

In Tasmania, teams WA and QLD tackled the massive corner block of Sean and Ella, with a brand new set of rules.

Andrew and Jono opted for the back and sweeping side entrance, whilst Aaron and Daniella took to transforming the substantial front yard to make the most of this Tassie treasure, with stunning results.

WA brothers Andrew and Jono introduced beautiful timbers and potted concrete planters answer the “no fuss Scandi” rule from Sean and Ella to create a sophisticated entrance.

Andrew and Jono’s zone took in the side entrance to the Tasmanian home and they pushed the design brief to the limit to build and install a cascading set of timber platforms to form a raised walkway leading up to the front door. Offsetting the position of each frame, this clever design is a step outside the norm and softens the overall effect of the structures. Plantings of Lomondra create an easy-care entrance garden and the “Autumn Blaze” maple tree looms large on the hilltop.

The Arrosto woodfired pizza oven from Barbeques Galore sets the scene for entertaining in the back garden, flanked by Pittosporum Screenmaster shrubs along the fence. The Adelphi modular seating arrangement provides a snug space to congregate.

Andrew and Jono created a clever edible kitchen garden using a sunny wall in the back yard, with framed pots of herbs positioned to take advantage of the Tasmanian sun. Supported by potted fruiting ‘Sturma Pippin’ apple and ‘Corrella’ pear trees, the area is paved for easy access and finished with loose stone.

Festoon lighting strung across the newly ‘Blueblend’ turfed lawn gives ample wattage for party time. Paved entertaining zone is surrounded by a sandstone garden embankment.

With Aaron and Daniella taking on the front yard zone, including an “Entertainers’ deck” stated in Sean and Ella’s rules, work in this immense area included boundary fencing, lawn and a fire pit.

This incredible view was crying out for a roomy deck to take it all in and Aaron and Daniella met the brief admirably with tall white metal stools (from Kmart) for perching and bench seats and a generous outdoor table for dining. Bi-fold doors open directly onto the space, extending from the indoor area and providing uninterrupted sight lines across the bay.

Compressed hardwood privacy screens from QAQ painted in Charcoal bookend the deck behind the barbeque. Table accessories are from Kmart.

Aaron and Daniella took a risk by painting the wall pink above the charcoal in this seated area under the entertainers’ deck. The pair needed designer Carolyn’s advice and assistance in getting the fencing level right to enjoy the view from here. Quilted ‘Geo’ and ‘Kira’ cushions are from Kmart.

Aaron and Daniela satisfied the brief to “warm us up with a fire pit” in the front yard, with a simple arrangement of brick and concrete linear slab forms serving as seating, storage and a stylish design statement. Hard lines were softened by a circular surround of loose stone and topped with timber for seating.
