If you want to make a statement in your home, a feature wall is a great way to add drama without being over-powering.

When looking for bathroom design ideas in the Prize Home this week, House Rules contestants Chiara and David chose a dramatic wall of Moroccan-style tiles (Majorca Press in Black, from Beaumont Tiles) on the floor, wrapping them behind the bath.

Judge Drew Heath was a big fan, saying it was a great example of how to do a feature wall well. He says the busy pattern worked because Team WA kept to a monochromatic palette.

“It’s not hard to do,” Drew adds. “But when it’s the right scale tile, like the one used in the main bathroom, it goes with the bath, and all the tapware. It made you not just look at the bath and go, ‘Oh, well, that’s an amazing bath’, which everyone does with those freestanding egg baths, thinking they need to be the centrepiece. What was clever about that is that it wasn’t the centrepiece, the tiling was the main thing and the bath was second to that.”

Another clever feature wall in the house was the pop of colour provided by the Florence Broadhurst wallpaper used in the ensuite.

“The ensuite bathroom where the Florence Broadhurst pattern was used blew me away,” says Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. “Invisible until the door was closed and you turned around, it had an elegant theatricality to it. I think La Bella Florence would herself have loved it.”
