House Rules took teams to Melbourn to transform Tim’s tired weatherboard cottage exterior into, “An entirely different looking house,” according to judge Wendy Moore.
Dance teachers Pete & Courtney wowed the judges with their modern makeover of the front yard to land the top spot on the leaderboard. Other teams got mixed results, with Lisa and Andy failing to impress with their sunken lounge and Shayn & Carly playing it too safe with their backyard zone.
Pete & Courtney: Front garden
Pete and Courtney’s brave choices with colour and plantings paid off – homeowners Tim & Mat loved the choice of colours, with Tim saying he’d have chosen exactly the same himself – including the bright orange front door. Judges too were impressed and Jamie, in particular, applauded Pete’s careful planning of the plant choices and the structure saying, “You created a structure, a magnet, a reason to be there. It was brilliant.”
Pete & Courtney earned a total score of 35 from the judges.
Shayn & Carly: Dining & Play zone
Whilst Tim & Mat felt the bar at the bottom of the garden was too far from the house, judge Jamie loved the way it used the space and drew people into the garden. Wendy marvelled at the pop-up beer tap and the judges all felt that Shayne and Carly nailed the rule of “Build a place to hang with mates” with the bar area.
Shayn & Carly scored a total of 31 from the judges, which landed them second on the leaderboard.
Lisa & Andy: Outdoor lounge and sunken fire pit
In their first exterior renovation, Lisa & Andy worked to hit the house rule of “Fuse formal with hip Melbourne out back,” creating a stunning lounge area off the living room of the house and a separate sunken fire pit. Whilst the judges loved the lounge area, LLB describing it as, “Extremely sophisticated,” the fire pit was considered a safety hazard for children with so much blue stone paving.
Lisa & Andy received a total score of 30 from the judges, including their 3 extra points for the fixup of the master bedroom.
