Housekeeping is good for you – here’s why

Good for the mind, good for the body, good for the soul
John Downs

We know it’s a necessity to keep yourself and your family safe and healthy in the home. What you may not know however, is that engaging in housekeeping on a regular basis has many benefits that keep your mental health in check, keep you fit and give you a sense of general wellbeing that little else can provide.

Good for the mind

According to Headspace, a study by the Society for Neuroscience showed that visual clutter can provide too much stimulation for the brain. Having things strewn around the home and constantly building up around you can make it difficult to focus on what’s important right now – whether that’s working from home, cooking dinner, helping with homework or simply relaxing after a busy day. A good tidy up by clearing the clutter to achieve streamlined surfaces is a great way to give your mind a break.

Good for the body

If you seem to get a lot more housework done in your activewear, it may be because it’s clothing designed for body movement – something housekeeping definitely requires a lot of! In fact, according to the Good Housekeeping Institute, doing two hours of ‘intense’ household chores can actually be just as beneficial as a visit to the gym – without leaving the house! Bupa has some tips on ways to approach specific tasks for maximum benefit.

Good for the soul

Whilst the ‘perfect home’ may not be a realistic expectation for everyone, the closer you get to the lifestyle you imagined, the greater your sense of accomplishment should be.

Perhaps when you first invested in your home the idea of having enough storage was a dream you’ve now realised, or was it your goal to split your children into their own rooms or create a designated home office space?

Take a moment to consider how just much you have achieved and express yourself in your home – have fun with decorating your kids’ rooms, finally display your treasures collected from years of travel, or rejoice in having enough space to fit your laundry basket.

For isn’t it the little things in life that ultimately feed our souls?
