Is pattern the new neutral?

We get the lowdown from an expert on how to use it in your home
Greg Natale

Pattern is trending in interiors and we couldn’t be more excited! From embossed and patterned tiles to wallpaper and textured paint finishes, there are myriad ways to inject some excitement into your home with careful use of colours and layers of pattern.

It’s a delicate balance to getting it right and helps to have an expert on hand to show how it’s done. Enter the Prince of Pattern himself, interior designer Greg Natale – hot off the Decor and Design stage where he presented a sneak peek of his new book The Patterned Interior to the who’s who of the interior design and decorating world. We sat down with Greg for a few tips on embracing pattern in our homes.

What are your three top tips to incorporate pattern in the home?

1. I always like to mix organic patterns with a geometric pattern, that way you create a nice visual tension. Also introducing a block colour in there helps to anchor it all.

2. Depending on the space, being smart about how you repeat a pattern rather than introducing a new one can help with creating cohesion.

    3. Using patterned rugs or carpet are a great way to bring contrast to a room, through their own decorative details and by highlighting the different finishes of furniture against the colourful wool.

Which local Australian artists are peaking your interest?

At present I am loving the work of Dale Frank. Dale’s use of colour and the scale he works to is mesmerizing, the paintings envelop you.  We have been lucky enough to purchase a few of Dale’s works for recently complete projects and some projects that we will install in 2019.

What projects have you got in the pipeline we can look forward to?

We never stop! We have so much on the boil. We are currently working on some incredible homes in Melbourne and Sydney as well as some impressive commercial developments in Perth.  Our new accessories collection is released later this year. But first, we set off in September to launch The Patterned Interior in London, New York and Los Angeles. It’s a busy year ahead!

Four years in the making, The Patterned Interior will be released worldwide in September and reveals thirteen of Greg’s new decorating projects.
