Outdoor Entertaining Areas

How to prepare your home for a summer of entertaining

It all begins in the backyard

It’s near impossible to ignore the call of sunshine during an Aussie summer, begging you to take the party outdoors. Since summer truly is the season for entertaining, your backyard is about to get a real workout. Here’s how to get your outdoor space ready for many a summer soiree:

Upgrade your deck

The kitchen may be the heart of the home, but your deck is the hub of all outdoor activities. The perfect platform for hosting gatherings, if you don’t currently have one, or yours is looking a little tired or rotten, a fresh new deck is a worthy investment. If you’re after a durable deck that looks chic, try HardieDeck. The clever installation system ensures all screws are concealed so you get a smooth and gap-free result for a smart look and a perfectly flat surface (no more wobbly tables!). Plus, it’s made from compressed fibre cement, which is resistant to moisture damage and termites, and won’t swell, split or warp. It’s also a great option in flame zones and low-to-ground decks where timber is unsuitable.

Kit out your barbecue area

Now that you’ve got a great new deck to host the party on, you’ll need somewhere to cook up a feast. Since summer is all about the barbecue, make sure yours is well equipped for the job. To give it an outdoor-kitchen makeover, add a bench (preferably with wheels) for preparing, serving and storing all the essentials. Hint: It can even be used as a bar cart after dinner. Buy cooking utensils and servingware specifically for alfresco dining so you don’t need to keep going in and out of your indoor kitchen.

Add a fire pit

Yes, summer is hot enough already, but who doesn’t love a good fire. A fire pit is a striking centerpiece that evokes a warm and inviting ambience at any get-together. Fun fact: A fire can help keep the mosquitoes away. Regardless of whether you choose a permanent structure or a portable pit, create a designated area for it, along with plenty of seating. Don’t forget the marshmallows!
