IKEA’s new collection will surprise you

You wont believe where they got the inspiration
IKEA

IKEA draws on their own vintage furniture to develop a new limited edition collection.

Inspired by best selling pieces from the 1980s, IKEA looked to their own factory floor for the design and manufacture inspiration of their new limited edition collection called VÄSSAD.

Spearheading the range is brother-sister design duo Knut Hagberg and Marianne Hagberg who seriously know what they’re doing. “Part of the soul of IKEA”, they have been designing with IKEA for over 37 years(!) and were on the team who originally designed the iconic blue bag and have designed an incredible 1600 products over the years for IKEA – on average one a week! Knut and Marianne consulted IKEA factory workers when choosing materials for the collection and literally designed most of the range on the factory floor.

“You always need to think about the price, material, production, function and environment – when everything works together with a beautiful form then it becomes a great product”

This process has resulted in a collection that we think should be quite exciting for IKEA fans – industrial in its design and manufactured using metals and dark colours. Lighting and storage pieces as we’ve not been used to seeing from IKEA in more recent years. Simple, honest, functional pieces still in the affordable price range we rely on IKEA for.

The VÄSSAD collection includes larger items such as dining tables and funky crate-like storage units, together with cool metal baskets and old-school style folding dining chairs (which are under $50!), all designed along sturdy industrial lines that are simple and functional, with a contemporary edge – very IKEA.

In case you’re getting out of your comfort zone here, rest assured there are a couple of flatwoven rugs and woollen throws to well, make us feel comfortable.
