No fuss, all function – modern white kitchens emphasise form and finish, with slick, streamlined designs that suit virtually any setting.
Flooring and lighting
A pair of silver pendants from Ambience Lighting (for similar, try Emac & Lawton) heralds the entrance to this kitchen: a blend of panelled cabinets and routed flat-fronted cupboards united with a coat of Dulux Antique White USA and topped with American oak benchtops, which have been given a walnut stain. New flooring in Australian blackbutt, found at Tait Home Timber & Hardware, was chosen to chime with the home’s original Baltic pine boards.
Cabinetry and splashback
In this kitchen, the cabinetry is topped in Caesarstone in Snow, a warm white with a forgiving, lightly flecked appearance. A single row of ‘Bellazza’ structural ceramic wall tiles from Bunnings creates an upstand at the back of the benchtop, with a window splashback composed of pool-fence glass, above, bringing in a torrent of natural light and pretty garden views.
Floorboards
The timber floorboards are a main feature and contribute so much to the whole ambience of this kitchen. Without the timber in the floorboards and island bench, the kitchen would lose a lot of character and warmth.
Island
The floating L-shaped benchtop in this kitchen allows easy social interaction and designates a space for guests to sit around the island without cluttering the cook’s workspace. The benchtop isn’t actually timber, but an authentic-looking and much more cost-effective wood laminate finish in Noce Vintage. The rest of the slim benchtop is Silestone in Yukon Blanco, which has a lightweight look that is a neat counterweight to the heavier look of the wood.
Splash of colour
In this kitchen, the island bench is as hardworking as it is eye-catching. The cantilevered timber benchtop provides more seating space without adding bulk, keeping the kitchen feeling light and airy. Citrus-hued Tolix stools (try Matt Blatt for similar) contribute to the cheerful look. Beyond, the splashback of handmade subway tiles has a lovely textured finish which
adds interest to the predominantly white walls.
