Our room recipe to whip up a wonderland for your child
John Downs

Decorating a kid’s bedroom allows you to let your imagination run wild on behalf of your child. Colour, theme, decoration and design can all spread their wings and anything is possible – expand your child’s horizons, stimulate imagination and create a fun and safe space for rest and play.

This monochrome marvel was designed for a three-year-old boy and is not only filled with heart and soul, its design crosses all age groups to allow for plenty of adventure and creativity over the years – from fantasy to friendships, sleepovers to study and everything in between.

Here’s our Room Recipe to create a killer kids’ room in your home:

“I love that we could do it ourselves – plus I’ve tried to decorate and furnish the room without breaking the bank.”

Method

1. Create a snug base with a generous, textured rug to anchor the colour scheme

2. Set the scene with an inviting wall mural in matching tones. This was hand-painted by the homeowner Camey and her father in Dulux Black Caviar and Whitsunday Island, but if you’re lacking confidence here, try wall decals for similar designs

3. Layer the bed with hard-wearing high-quality bed linen that will last the distance through a few colourways

4. Add touches of trends with colour and pattern from fun cushions

5. Dot the space with pops of colour in meaningful pieces – like the upcycled bookshelf and garage sale bedside table

6. Make it personal by including room for handmade touches and displaying treasures
