A temporary wallpaper feature can bring life to a room and, with today’s range of paste-the-wall papers, is an easy update as children mature. Tess Beagley of Minted Interiors suggests using a favourite artwork as a guide if you’re finding it hard to pin down a colour palette. “I like to select a hero piece and let the colours in it determine the palette for the rest of the space,” she says. “Also, never overlook scale: if you have a huge wall a tiny piece of artwork will never look quite right.”

If you don’t want to be redecorating frequently, opt for wallpaper patterns with a motif that offers a sense of fun without being overly babyish, such as spots, stars, chevrons, stripes and natural elements.

Neutral paint colours can act as a stylish backdrop for items that can easily be swapped around as baby grows. Tess has a few fresh favourites. “I like to use duck-egg blue or a blush pink in a girl’s room, and I think a soft grey, such as Dulux Meniscus in half-strength, for a boy’s room, is a great neutral,” she says.
