Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have taken fans on a tour through their minimalist home, and shared an intimate Q&A about family life.

The couple’s suburban Los Angeles home was showcased in the latest issue of Architectural Digest, but when they first set eyes on it, it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

“We passed by this incredibly extravagant house while strolling through the neighborhood,” Kim told the magazine. “I didn’t really know Kanye’s style at that point, but I thought the house was perfection. Kanye was less enthusiastic. He said, ‘It’s workable.’”

Seven years after purchasing the property, the couple have transformed it from a McMansion into a “futuristic Belgian monastery”.

The Kardashian-Wests hired renowned Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt for the project.

“Kanye and Kim wanted something totally new,” the designer says. “We didn’t talk about decoration but a kind of philosophy about how we live now and how we will live in the future. We changed the house by purifying it, and we kept pushing to make it purer and purer.”

“The one thing Kanye and I had in common was our preference for a neutral palette. I love the simplicity of the design. Everything in the outside world is so chaotic. I like to come into a place and immediately feel the calmness,” Kim says.

While the house doesn’t seem like a typical family home, the couple say their four children are allowed a lot of freedom, and can ride their scooters down the hallway and jump around on the low tables.

“This house may be a case study, but our vision for it was built around our family,” Kanye says.

“In the end, we don’t take it too seriously. We’re not going to be fanatics,” Kim adds.
