Bavaria is probably best known as the German state that hosts the Oktoberfest each year. And while the world's largest beer festival is certainly worth a visit, Bavaria and its historic capital Munich have a lot more to offer than beer-fueled escapades. If you happen to be in the German south, make sure you visit some (if not all) of its stunning castles, royal residences and regal holiday homes.

Schloss Fürstenreid began as a hunting lodge (built from 1715-17) for Elector Max II Emmanuel by Joseph Effner. A century later, it was where King Otto (brother of Ludwig II) lived from 1883 until his death in 1916. Since 1925, it has been a Catholic house for spiritual exercises.
