If your Pampa rug not only anchors your living room decor but also serves to calm the enormous mound of life’s responsibilities, perhaps its literal Latin American meaning, “a plain between the mountains” has something to do with that.
We chat to its designer and one half of the pair behind the Byron Bay-based homewares label, Victoria Aguirres, who shares the origins and inspiration behind the brand and offers a glimpse into what gems we can expect to see this year from Pampa as they expand their ethically produced, artisanal range of homewares.
How did Pampa come to be?
“In 2013, co-founder Carl Wilson and I launched our first project by partnering with artisan groups in Argentina, traveling back and forth to source one-of-a-kind rugs woven by artists in their homes. From small beginnings, our range has expanded to include woven throws, cushion covers and accessories handmade by people all over Argentina and in other parts of South America.

You also have your own range of fine-art prints. If you could choose just one print to hang in your home forever, which would it be and why?
“Most probably our popular ‘Spirit’ print because it was one of the first images I ever shot from the series ‘Pampa Horses’ and I have a special connection to that moment in time back at my homeland, Argentina.”
How would you describe your style?
“It’s earthy, neutral and textural.”
How do you produce your homewares?
“We design our pieces in our studio here in Byron Bay and work side-by-side with over 100 artisans living remotely in Argentina that weave our rugs, cushions and throws, bags and baskets. It’s like a big family all under Pampa’s trade. We believe in an ethically made products and think the world should transit more and more down that road.”

What is in store for Pampa in 2019?
“New rugs arrivals are now more frequent than ever, so we are constantly updating our collection and we have a very exciting collaboration with a furniture designer from Argentina working with leather.”
