The dishwasher is up there as one of the greatest kitchen appliances. While you can fill it with most of your dirty crockery, some things that are better off being hand washed.

To help you out, here are six items you should never put it in your dishwasher.

Anything wood

It can be awkward to clean but resist the urge to place your wooden chopping board in the dishwasher. The hot water can cause the wood to warp out of shape. Not to mention, wood tends to absorb surrounding odours and flavours.

Good knives

Dishwashing detergent combined with water pressure is a recipe for blunt knives. Also, leaving your knives to air dry in the machine can cause rust spots.

Copper pots and pans

Certain metals are prone to corrosion and discoloration. This includes aluminium and copper.

Vintage crockery

Again, the mix of hot water and detergent can be harmful to your grandma’s old china, causing the gold trim or hand-painted details to disappear.

Your cheese grater

The cheese grater is basically dishwasher resistant. Any cheese residue left on this utensil will more than likely still be there after your cycle has finished.

Crystal items

Washing your finest crystal by hand can be scary. But cracks and breakages are more likely to occur when washing crystal items in the dishwasher.
