It is considered the heart of the home, but according to Ikea, this key room could be obsolete in the future.
So says Tiffany Buckins, Ikea Australia’s Head of Interior Design, who spoke to news.com.au about the future of domestic design at Sydney’s Vivid Ideas festival.
“Urbanisation is seeing more and more people move towards cities. And more people in the same space challenges our lifestyles and calls for new living conditions,” Tiffany said.
“From visiting the homes of Australians all over the country, we know that the average home is shrinking in size.”
Tiffany predicts that as our homes shrink, our dependence on communal living will grow, and in the process, we may end up losing a whole room for the greater good.
“In the future you may not need a kitchen because you can go to a communal area to cook and prepare your meals, or heat up your ready-made meal,” she said.
It’s not as strange as it sounds. We’re already spending more time working in communal work spaces, so perhaps the kitchen is next?
