The Home Beautiful team scours Australia each year for the most beautiful rooms we can find in our readers’ homes for our annual Beautiful Rooms competition.

Every year the responses take our breath away and we delight in poring over the entries – choosing our favourites is one of our biggest challenges!

Here are just ten of our favourites from last year’s entries.

1. Breathtaking bathroom

This Queensland gem had the HB team imagining long afternoon soaks in a room with an ever-changing view. “This is my definition of a dream bathroom,” says HB editor Sarah. “To be able to have complete privacy with windows like that is quite incredible.”

“I love the feeling of being suspended in the landscape. this bathroom truly imparts a feeling of tranquility”

Pamela, Homeowner

2. Leather and lifestyle

The ‘ooos’ and ‘ahhs’ were loud and clear when 50 Beautiful Rooms judges Sarah and Jessica came across this lovely Western Australian gem. Both were fans of the stunning gallery wall, which cleverly camouflages the television and visually expands the ceiling height. The carefully curated pieces and calming palette also won brownie points. “The simple lines of the furniture are quite versatile and allow for decoration that can take the look in a few different directions,” says head of styling Jessica of Temple & Webster.

“Everything ties so nicely together in this room, without it feeling overstyled or forced”

Julia Hoolahan, HB acting art director

3. Mid-century mood

For Jessica, head of styling at Temple & Webster, a beautiful room is one that reflects the story of the people within – and this inviting space full of personal collectables does exactly that. “It’s a room that’s reflective of the homeowner’s interests and her family’s life, which makes the space instantly feel cosy and approachable,” she says of the finalist. The absence of a TV also scored points. “It’s actually a space for conversation,” remarks HB editor Sarah.

4. Sitting room with style

The updated mid-century aesthetic of this gorgeous sitting room won over our judges. “I love the pairing of the light fixture with that sofa,” says Jessica. “It’s very sophisticated. It feels a bit old-world New York, harking back to the olden days, but an updated version of it.”

“I wanted the room to feel a bit traditional but with a modern edge”

Paola, Homeowner

5. Open plan at its best

This sunshine-filled trio of zones melding into one drew high praise from our judges. “They’ve done a great job in making the most out of a small, open-plan space,” says HB editor Sarah. Jessica, agrees. “They’ve also made some very smart styling choices,” she says. “The fact that this coffee table is open at the bottom makes it all feel lighter.”

“I love this bank of doors opening to the outside – that’s how Australians want to live”

Sarah Burman, HB editor

6. Herringbone hero

“That flooring!” enthuses Jessica, about the star feature in this Melbourne kitchen. Imbued with warmth, the retro-inspired parquetry stamps the space with individuality. “It’s actually quite a challenge to do a white kitchen well, so I appreciate all the detailing,” adds Sarah.

7. Pretty in pink

Pretty pinks combine with smatterings of ink to make this romantic Melbourne bedroom a beauty. “I love the punches of black,” says Jessica. “It gives the space definition and makes a statement.” And the decorating choices? “It’s a beautiful eclectic mix,” she adds.

8. Powder room perfection

We have a soft spot for powder rooms here at HB. “They are an opportunity to really express yourself,” says Sarah. So when our Beautiful Rooms judges saw this little charmer, they were suitably dazzled. “The owners have ticked the box for everything that needs to happen in a small space, so it’s functional and makes a statement. Well done!” adds Jessica.

9. Next level dining

This entertainer in coastal Victoria received a round of applause from our judges. “Architecturally, this is a beautiful space,” says Sarah. “The staircase is amazing and they’ve chosen some beautiful fittings.” The stylish pendant that drops from the double height ceiling particularly caught the eye of Jessica. “It makes a statement without being overpowering,” she says.
