What’s the one tiny thing to make an ordinary visit extraordinary?
Anticipate your guest’s needs.
Consider the essentials you would find in a nice hotel and have these things ready and in clear sight of your guests as soon as they arrive. Fresh towels, an extra pillow and blanket and a fresh cake of fragrant handmade soap.
If it’s friends or family, you’ll usually have an idea of what they like – try to prepare for these little comforts that will make yours a home away from home for them. Perhaps it’s classical music, or they’ve mentioned looking forward to having a soak in your bathtub because they don’t have one at home.
Set up a speaker with an iPod loaded with a classical playlist. Pop a pretty bath bomb or essential oils atop their towel at the end of the bed to encourage bath time. Stack a few books for a night time reader, or magazines for an interiors aficionado or fashionista.
You might like to fill a jar with little snacks or sweet treats and set it up on a tray or in a basket, together with a jug and water glasses, or mugs with a selection of teas.
Think about your own routine – both early morning and at night. What would make you more comfortable? Perhaps some essential oils and candles next to a burner to encourage a restful night’s sleep.
Whilst many of these things are not essential to your guest’s stay, anticipating their needs will avoid the need for them to ask and simply make them feel more welcome and comfortable.
