Stepping into The Budapest Café is like entering an elegant pastel dreamscape.
In a city that is most famous for being the home of the Giant Panda, it’s not surprise that its newest café is cute as a button.
Take a seat in the Eero Aarnio 'Bubble' chair and soak in the sheer charm of this incredible space. Start with the whimsical pastel colour scheme and let it wash calm over you like the musk-pink spheres in the little ball pit – you’ll never know you’re in the middle of one of the busiest cities in China.
Completed in October 2017, The Budapest Café is located in Chengdu by award-winning Melbourne based design studio Biasol and it’s everything you dreamed a café could be.
Designed to “offer an experience that detaches patrons from the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” the café design “…draws on Anderson’s meticulous, memorable and magical worlds to create an inviting destination with whimsical character and international appeal,” says Biasol.
A chic cast of Muuto ‘Nerd’ dining chairs in dark green and soft petrol blue hug a collection of marble-topped tables in square and round shapes, dotted around the room. The moody green is offset by neon signage and pastel macaron-like velvet chair pads that beckon from a theatre-style terrazzo podium that curves to form the base of a dark green staircase that rises to a mezzanine.
Symmetry abounds in cleverly layered arches, curves and steps featuring throughout, leading somewhere and nowhere. An Arteomus marble bar anchors the space and plays host to ‘Hang Tall’ stools from Australian designers, Meizai.
“We began by understanding Anderson’s style: his symmetrical, precise and quirky set designs; vivid and nostalgic colour palettes; and the sentiment that infuses his films"Biasol
The building façade projects a sense of grandeur with an arch framing the entrance and, “concept, colours and details continue through the branding, which is integrated into the design of the café to contribute to the imaginative and evocative space,” says Biasol.
The bathrooms surprise with speckled pink terrazzo to complement and contrast with the nostalgic-green hues of the café.
“Like Anderson, we create imaginative and evocative spaces. Our design for The Budapest Café has a relaxed and indulgent atmosphere; a whimsical and elegant aesthetic; and a hospitality experience infused with Melbourne’s café culture”Biasol
We can't get enough of The Budapest Café and, if you love Wes Anderson's aesthetic, neither will you.
