What you need to know before buying a mattress

Buying a mattress is a costly and often boring affair that requires trips to furniture stores and lots of online research about memory foam, springs and back support. We’ve narrowed down what it is you really need to know before buying a mattress, and done the hard work for you. All that’s left is to go shopping!

What kind of mattress is best for me?

Firm: If you sleep on your stomach a firm mattress will keep your spine aligned.

Medium: If you sleep on your back a medium mattress will provide support for your spine, back and neck.

Soft: Great for sleeping on your side because it will offer support and contour to your body’s curves.

What are the different types of mattresses?

Coil: Usually lighter and cheaper but can wear out quickly, springs are less responsive to your body, the springs can rust and you’ll feel your partner moving around in bed.

Memory Foam: Memory foam are a little more expensive, starting in at over $1000 usually. They absorb your weight, take pressure off joints and can mould to the shape of your body. Unfortunately, this can lead to you feeling cased up in bed, it can feel a little too dense and isn’t great for people who want a more cushioned nights’ sleep.

Latex/Foam: Ranging from $1000 to $5000, these are durable, breathable and don’t gather dust mites. However, they have a solid feel, can be heavy and cheaper versions can get lumpy over time.

Pocket-Spring: on the cheaper side, these have good air circulation, distribute weight evenly and can support people of different weights well due to the springs being separately cased, however they can make allergies worse and the springs can rust.

How to pick a mattress:

  • Take your time and test laying on the mattress the same way you usually sleep for a decent amount of time.
  • Move about, roll over, get up, sit down and ensure this mattress offers ease of movement. If the mattress is too soft it will take more effort, too firm and it will put strain on your hips and shoulders.
  • Make sure the bed base the mattress you are testing out is similar to the one you have at home. Tis can affect how the mattress feels.
  • If you have a bed partner, they must be present during the mattress shopping to ensure the mattress doesn’t move too much when the other person is getting up or laying down.
  • Don’t shop when you’re tired. Otherwise any lie down will feel good.
  • If the salesperson is being pushy, feel free to ask them to give you some time alone.
  • Ask how long this display mattress has been in store – this will give you an idea of wear and tear.
