3 secrets to perfect storage in your home

Organising your belongings will help organise your mind - by Diana Moore

With a growing trend towards minimalism, home organisation has never been more top of mind.

That said, we still need countless things in our homes to facilitate life for our growing families. Working with the theory that organisation and storage are the key to keeping our stuff at bay, we spoke to the Temple & Webster Styling Team to find ways to achieve solutions that are both functional and stylish.

Kitchen storage

Let’s face it, who doesn’t need more storage in their kitchen? Free standing shelving is a really easy and on trend way to add some more storage options and there are so many ways to use it. Create a functional yet stylish display of your favourite cookbooks, dinnerware and greenery. Freestanding shelves are also great for storing pantry items if you’re tight on space. Add some baskets to the lower shelves for storing dry goods like potatoes and onions and store non-perishables in colourful packaging (like tinned tomatoes or spices) on the upper shelves.

Entryway storage

When choosing a console for your entryway, pay attention to the shape of your room first and console second. While a lot of consoles will suit these typically narrow room shapes, larger ones can fill out the space if you’re blessed with a large entryway. Look for pieces that provide storage to reduce surface clutter: small drawers can host everyday items, while underneath space can be utilised with woven baskets. Ergo, the perfect spot to store shoes, the dog lead, umbrellas and more.  Additionally, a long bench can double up as a perching spot to pull on your shoes, as well as a surface area for storage solutions for the essentials.

Pantry storage

It’s easy to let things get out of control in the pantry – half-used ingredients build up, spice packets lie dormant, and it can become hard to find the items you need. Baskets are handy for grouping items together such as unopened pasta and rice packets, condiments and sauces, party and picnic products. You can also keep multiples of items in baskets on higher shelves or out of sight until you need them.  Glass storage containers and mason jars are a great option for storing a wide range of dry foods, and help create an ordered, simplified look for your pantry.
